Accident History for n468ac

N-Number Make Model Location Description Time
N468AC CHECCA RV6A RIVERSIDE, CA ON JULY 15, 2021 APPROXIMATELY 1950 ZULU TIME N468AC, AN EXPERIMENTAL RV6 AIRCRAFT ENTERED LEFT BASE AT RIVERSIDE AIRPORT FOR RUNWAY 27 AND WAS CLEARED TO LAND, WHEN ON A ? MILE FINAL, THE PILOT TRANSMITTED A LOSS OF POWER. THE RV6 IMPACTED THE GROUND APPROXIMATELY 150 YARDS EAST OF THE RUNWAY THRESHOLD. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST INVERTED AND FACING NORTH. THERE WAS A SHALLOW HILL APPROXIMATELY 300 FEET EAST OF THE AIRCRAFT WHICH IT APPEARED THE AIRCRAFT CLEARED AND THEN A 30 FOOT LONG GROVE IN THE DIRT 60 TO 80 FEET EAST OF WHERE N468AC CAME TO REST. THE PILOT AND PASSENGER WERE TAKEN TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL WITHIN AN HOUR OF THE ACCIDENT. THE FAA WAS ALSO ON SITE WITHIN AN HOUR OF THE ACCIDENT. FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE LOWER COWLING AREA AND BY THE DAMAGE FOUND WHAT APPEARED TO BE LITTLE OR NO POWER COMING FROM THE ENGINE. A DISCUSSION WITH THE PILOTS FLYING THE AIRCRAFT REVEALED THE CIRCUMSTATNCES OF THE FLIGHT AS FOLLOWS: THIS AIRCRAFT WAS RECENTLY PURCHASED AND FLOWN FROM CHICAGO, ILLINOIS TO RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA WITH A LOCAL FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR ACTING AS PILOT IN COMMAND FOR MOST OF THE TRIP. THE FLIGHT ON THE DAY OF THE ACCIDENT WAS INTENDED TO GET ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ MORE FAMILIAR WITH THE AIRCRAFT AND FLIGHT CURRENT. THE FLIGHT TOOK THEM OUT TO THE LOCAL PRACTICE AREA (LAKE MATHEWS) AND WAS APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR IN DURATION, CONSISTING OF GENERAL MANAUVERS TO INCLUDE STALLS, STEEP TURNS, AND SLOW FLIGHT. DURING SLOW FLIGHT OVER LAKE MATHEWS THE ENGINE QUIT RUNNING, HOWEVER THEY WERE ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE USING THE PRIMER SYSTEM. AT THAT TIME, THE PILOTS RETURNED TO RIVERSIDE AIRPORT. WHEN NEARING THE TRAFFIC PATTERN, THE RIVERSIDE TOWER ASKED N468AC TO EXTEND DOWNWIND BEFORE TURNING FINAL. THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR STATED THAT HE WAS ACTING AS PILOT IN COMMAND AND WHEN ON LONG FINAL, THE AIRCRAFT WAS INDICATING 129 KNOTS. THE TOWER ASKED N468AC TO SLOW DOWN. AFTER COMPLYING AND PULLING THE POWER BACK, THE ENGINE QUIT AGAIN. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT IN COMMAND, THEY WENT THROUGH THE CHECKLIST CONSIDERING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE IN THIS AIRCRAFT FOR A RESTART, BUT WERE COMMITTED TO LAND SHORT OF RUNWAY 27 AT RIVERSIDE AIRPORT AND REPORTED THE ENGINE OUT AND UNABLE TO MAKE THE RUNWAY TO THE TOWER. THE AIRCRAFT WAS TAKEN TO CHINO AIRPORT ON JULY 16, 2021 FOR INSPECTION. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ RECORDS SHOW THAT THE AIRCRAFT FUEL WAS TOPPED OFF ON JULY 01, 2021 BY RIVERSIDE AIR SERVICE AND THAT THE CONDITION INSPECTION FOR THE AIRCRAFT WAS CURRENT. THE ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ OF ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ CALLED THE FAA ON DUTY AND REPORTED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS FOUND WITH THE THROTTLE AND MIXUTRE FULL FORWARD AFTER ARRIVING TO THE AIRCRAFT TO DISCONNECT THE ELT. THIS ACCIDENT IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION BY THE NTSB AND THE REPORT WILL BE UPDATED AS MORE INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE. SAS NUMBER: WP21202102535 2021-07-15

Aviation Datasets Explained

Aircraft Lookup allows anyone to quickly search public datasets published by various aviation administrative services as well as marketplaces and other private aviation data providers in the United States. These datasets provide valuable insight into the history and maintenance record of any aircraft registered in the US. When you provide an N-Number above, we cross reference historical SDR, FAA, and NTSB datasets to identify any relevant records related to that N-Number.

As you may be aware, N-Numbers are not connected to an aircraft for the life of that aircraft - N-Numbers may be deregistered, and re-registered to completely different aircraft. For that reason, please confirm that the details of any search result correspond to the make and model you intended to pull records for.

SDR, FAA, and NTSB databases are provided as follows:

The Service Difficulty Reports (SDR) dataset is defined as "[t]he reports submitted by certificate holders and certificated repair stations, known as service difficulty reports (SDR's), provide the FAA with airworthiness statistical data necessary for planning, directing, controlling, and evaluating certain assigned safety-related programs." This data is, in its raw form, a tab-delimited file with encoded field headers.

The FAA Registration dataset is fairly straightforward - it is a listing of current registrations (along with addresses, aircraft serial number, and other basic metadata) at any point in time. The registration data is a comma delimited file that has named fields at the top of each file. The FAA provides historical data on their site for the previous few years.

The FAA Accident/Incident dataset covers a range of accidents and incidents that may or may not overlap with NTSB data. Typically, more significant crashes are covered by NTSB data while less significant crashes are more comprehensively covered by the FAA Accident/Incident data, which will frequently include minor events like gear-up landings and so forth. The data provided by the FAA is in a tab-delimited file with encoded field headers.

The NTSB investigation dataset is distinct from the FAA dataset. While the number of accidents or incidents they cover are less numerous, the depth at which they are covered is significantly deeper when reported by the NTSB. While each record from the NTSB contains incredible amounts of metadata related to people responsible for the flight, prevailing meteorological conditions at the time of flight, and passengers aboard, this aircraft lookup tool only provides basic summary data. The full dataset is provided as a series of Microsoft access file databases on the NTSB site.
